Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?

(Frank Tashlin, US 1957, 94 min., 35mm)

In Tashlin’s magnificent lampoon of the consumer age, Tony Randall stars as advertising executive Rockwell Hunter. Looking for a celebrity to endorse his client’s product, Rock pursues movie star Rita Marlow (the voluptuous-and-then-some Jayne Mansfield), but Rita has her own agenda and soon her manipulations lead the media to label Rock as Rita’s “Lover Doll.” Outlandish, cartoonish, and enormously fun, Rock Hunter makes fun of everything that was the 1950s, including its own CinemaScope™ frame! Preceded by Tashlin’s shorts PORKY’S POULTRY PLANT (1936, 35mm nitrate print); PLANE DAFFY (1944, 35mm nitrate print); and THE FOX AND THE GRAPES (1941, 35mm).
