(Frank Tashlin, US 1952, 95 min., 35mm)
Faster and funnier than The Paleface, this sequel re-teams the great Bob Hope with one of his favorite leading ladies, Jane Russell. This time, Roy Rogers and Trigger are thrown into the gagfest as city dandy Bob tries to once again earn his spurs in the wild, wild West. Hope and Tashlin’s surreal and self-referential humor puts Son of Paleface in serious contention with Blazing Saddles for the screen’s greatest Western parody. Preceded by Tashlin’s shorts: Porky’s Railroad (1937, 16mm) and Dog Meets Dog (1942, 16mm).
