It's Only Money

(Frank Tashlin, US 1962, 84 min., 35mm)

In this send-up of mystery movies, Jerry Lewis stars as a television repairman who idolizes a private eye played by Jesse White (later the “Maytag Repairman”). Wanting to become a snoop himself, Jerry becomes involved in a case to locate the missing heir to a fortune. The story culminates with one of Tashlin’s signature slapstick sequences involving an army of runaway lawnmowers. The top-flight supporting cast includes Zachary Scott, Jack Weston, and Mae Questel, the voice of Betty Boop. Preceded by Tashlin’s shorts: THE CASE OF THE STUTTERING PIG (1937, 35mm nitrate print) and CRACKED ICE (1938, 35mm).
