For this rousing new musical, Bizet’s popular opera has been reset in a small, contemporary South African township and the lyrics translated into Xhosa. The marvelous Pauline Malefane, ample-bodied and voiced, is the cigarette factory worker heroine who sets out to seduce a policeman set to marry another woman. Integrating local rhythms, movement, and color into the classic, familiar story, English director Dornford-May’s imaginative production won the Golden Bear award for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival.
