(Victor Fleming, US 1934, 105 min., 35mm)
In the first sound adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s oft-told tale, Wallace Beery stars as the legendary peg-leg pirate Long John Silver. Beery’s co-star from The Champ and The Bowery, Jackie Cooper, plays young Jim Hawkins, who gets caught up in Silver’s plans to recapture the buried treasure of Captain Flint. Fleming, the director behind both The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind, delivers what is still considered the best of all big-screen versions of Stevenson’s novel. Preceded by a fragment from THE PIRATES (Pathé Frères Co., France 1907, 4 min., 35mm).
