Treasure Island

(Victor Fleming, US 1934, 105 min., 35mm)

In the first sound adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s oft-told tale, Wallace Beery stars as the legendary peg-leg pirate Long John Silver. Jackie Cooper, Beery’s co-star from The Champ and The Bowery, plays young Jim Hawkins, who gets caught up in Silver’s plans to re-capture the buried treasure of Captain Flint. Fleming, the director behind both The Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind, delivers what is still considered the best of all big-screen versions of Stevenson’s novel.
