(Paul Verhoeven, US 1990, 109 min., 35mm)
Verhoeven’s funny and visually dazzling adaptation of a Philip K. Dick story casts Arnold Schwarzenegger as a construction worker of the future who learns his noggin has been tampered with, and his memories may not be his own. Narrowly escaping his vicious “wife” (Sharon Stone), Arnold “gets his ass” to Mars where he’s destined to lead a colony of mutants in a revolution against a corporate dictator. Clever, satirical, and overflowing with comic-book violence, Total Recall was also the last great special-effects epic before the age of computer-generated imagery.
