An imaginative young boy joins a group of renegade, treasure-hunting dwarves for a series of adventures through time. This eccentric, dark fantasy film turns all the usual tropes of children’s movies upside down. Director Terry Gilliam employs an episodic narrative style and a creepy, busy visual design reminiscent of the animation he created for Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Pythoners John Cleese and Michael Palin make brief appearances, and Sean Connery is King Agamemnon.
