(Tim Hunter, US 1986, 99 min., 35mm)
Loosely based on the true story of a California high schooler who killed his girlfriend and bragged about it to his friends, this disturbing but classic youth film was also a powerful influence on the “grunge” look of the early ’90s. Among the disaffected teenagers are Ione Skye, Keanu Reeves, and an electric Crispin Glover as the hopped up, self-appointed group leader. In another of his memorable possessed performances, Dennis Hopper plays Feck, the teens’ psychotic mentor/drug dealer. River’s Edge’s director, Tim Hunter, who also helmed the early ’80s teen classic Tex, will discuss his work in person after the screening.
