(Charles Tait, Australia 1906, 26 min. fragment, 35mm)
Probably the world’s first feature film, The Story of the Kelly Gang is the screen’s first depiction of the legendary Australian folk hero Ned Kelly and his outlaw gang. This surviving fragment, recently restored by Australia’s National Film and Sound Archive, incorporates another 11 minutes of footage recently discovered. This special program of early films from NFSA also includes THE ROMANTIC STORY OF MARGARET CATCHPOLE (Raymond Longford, Australia 1911, 21 min., 35mm) and THUNDERBOLT (John Gavin, Australia 1910, 24 min., 35mm).
