(LA TOURNEUSE DE PAGES, Denis Dercourt, France 2006, 85 min., 35mm)
Revenge has never tasted so sweet as it does in this deliciously unnerving psychological thriller set in the world of classical music. At age ten, Mélanie, a gifted piano prodigy, fails her conservatory entrance exam juried by acclaimed pianist Ariane (Catherine Frot). Ten years later, Ariane unwittingly hires the young adult Mélanie (Déborah François) to be her page turner. As the already fragile Ariane fights to keep her career afloat, she becomes more and more dependent on Mélanie, who all the while coldly plots to dismantle every aspect of her employer’s personal and professional life. The wonderful performances by the unhinged Frot and the coolly controlled François (of the Dardennes’ L’enfant) deliver an enormously suspenseful study in contrasts.
