The Marines Who Never Returned

(TORAOJI ANNUN HAEBYONG, Man-Hui Lee, South Korea 1963, 110 min.)

This powerful account of the trials of a platoon during the Korean War focuses on character development rather than battle scenes, portraying the Marines’ friendships, their humanity, and conflicting thoughts and feelings regarding the war. Lee’s film was originally banned in South Korea for displaying what was perceived as “communist sympathies.”
