Ernest Hemingway’s much-anthologized short story served as the basis for this quintessential noir. Two cold-blooded hitmen visit a small town where they hunt down and kill “Swede” Andersen (Burt Lancaster in his first movie). An investigator (Edmond O’Brien) pieces together all of the events that led to the Swede’s downfall, chief among them his fatal attraction to Kitty Collins (Ava Gardner).
