The Holy Mountain

(LA MONTAÑA SAGRADA, Alejandro Jodorowsky, US/Mexico 1973, 114 min., English and Spanish with subtitles, 35mm)

Jodorowsky was given a considerably larger budget to follow-up his El Topo, and the resulting film is even more imaginative and spellbinding than its predecessor. The writer/director stars again as a wanderer on a spiritual quest with eight other powerful individuals. Their goal: find the Holy Mountain and replace the gods that live there. The eye-popping and jaw-dropping visuals are just the icing on the cake in this philosophical and thought-provoking classic.

I first discovered this brilliant film while working at an independent video store in Baltimore. It’s utterly unlike anything else I’ve seen. Many thanks to the Dryden for the chance to see it on the big screen! Definitely not one to miss.
