The Earrings of Madame De...

(MADAME DE…, Max Ophüls, France/Italy 1953, 105 min., French with subtitles, 35mm)

The exquisite Danielle Darrieux plays the frivolous, fickle wife of a humorless general (Charles Boyer). Needing money, she pawns the diamond earrings that were a gift from her husband, an act that leads to her meeting her true love, an Italian Baron (played by famed neorealist director Vittorio De Sica). This breathtakingly beautiful and technically impeccable production, featuring the much-heralded gliding tracking shots of filmmaker Ophüls, has been lovingly restored by Janus Films.
