(Frank Hurley, US 1919, 81 min.)
Explorer Ernest Shackleton’s incredible 1919 expedition to cross the Atlantic Ocean via the South Pole is captured here on film. With their ship frozen in an ice pack, Shackleton and crew bear months of arctic blasts with no sign of hope until he and a handful of men set off on an 800-mile hike for help. Capturing the struggles of Scott’s crew on this tragic, epic journey, cameraman Frank Hurley recorded majestic images of ice caves and wildlife that are absolutely spellbinding. One of the great cinematic rediscoveries in recent years, don’t miss your chance to see it on the big screen. Live piano by Philip C. Carli.
