Slums of Beverly Hills

(Tamara Jenkins, US 1998, 91 min.)

In her comically poignant semi-autobiographical feature debut, writer-director Jenkins (The Savages) follows an itinerant Jewish middle-class family as they evade landlords and move from one low-rent apartment to another in the typically upscale suburbs of Los Angeles. The story focuses on teenager Vivian (Natasha Lyonne), who struggles to understand her ne’er-do-well father (Alan Arkin) and help her asylum escapee older cousin (Marisa Tomei) while coping with the usual ordeals of adolescence. Preceded by FUGITIVE LOVE (Tamara Jenkins, US 1991, 15 min.)

Just announced: Writer-director Tamara Jenkins will be in person to introduce the film.
