In her comically poignant semi-autobiographical feature debut, writer-director Jenkins (The Savages) follows an itinerant Jewish middle-class family as they evade landlords and move from one low-rent apartment to another in the typically upscale suburbs of Los Angeles. The story focuses on teenager Vivian (Natasha Lyonne), who struggles to understand her ne’er-do-well father (Alan Arkin) and help her asylum escapee older cousin (Marisa Tomei) while coping with the usual ordeals of adolescence.
