(John Cassavetes, US 1959, 87 min.)
For his first venture into filmmaking, Cassavetes developed a script based on improvisations of students from his acting workshop. The story revolves around a young black woman (Lelia Goldoni) who passes for white, and whose first love affair leads her into conflict with her protective brothers (Hugh Hurd, Ben Carruthers). Film critic Marshall Fine will introduce the screening, and afterward discuss Cassavetes’ career and sign copies of his biography, Accidental Genius: How John Cassavetes Invented the Independent Film.
