(David Von Ancken, US 2007, 115 min., 35mm)
In a gripping Western and survival story set shortly after the Civil War, Southerner Liam Neeson pursues former Union commander Pierce Brosnan through snowy mountains, arid plains, and, ultimately, the desert. Talented director and co-writer Von Ancken makes the most of his cast (including Anjelica Huston) with an exciting story partially told in spare, but ultimately revealing flashback sequences. The gorgeous location cinematography makes this a must for big-screen viewing. Barely given a theatrical release, it’s easily one of the most overlooked films of the year.
