Christian Bale stars as Dieter Dengler in director Herzog’s second film about the Navy pilot’s miraculous escape from a POW camp in the jungles of Laos during the Vietnam War. Bale brings an eccentric intensity to the role and his co-stars (including Steve Zahn and Jeremy Davies as fellow prisoners and escapees) are equally fine.
