(Ben Niles, US 2007, 81 min., Digital Projection)
Based on a series of New York Times articles, this surprisingly fascinating new documentary attempts to answer the question: “How does a piano get to Carnegie Hall?” Director Niles delves into the history of the 150-year-old Steinway Company in Queens, one of the last outposts of handcraftsmanship in a machine-dominated industry, to find out what goes into the making of one concert grand. The sound of the Steinway is demonstrated by, among others, Harry Connick Jr., Hélène Grimaud, Kenny Barron, and Marcus Roberts.
“More than just a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into making a concert grand piano, the film empowers the blue-collar employees who take pride in their craft. It’s a look at one of the rare American companies to still put value on skilled, handmade labor, a company that hasn’t succumbed to mass production…” ~Anna Reguero, Democrat & Chronicle
