(Jim Jarmusch, US 1991, 125 min., 35mm)
In a variation of his Mystery Train, Jarmusch’s splendid follow-up feature shows us five taxicab rides taking place simultaneously around the globe: in Los Angeles, tough cookie Winona Ryder gives a lift to high-powered studio exec (Gena Rowlands); a German cabbie in Manhattan helps a bickering couple (Giancarlo Esposito and Rosie Perez) sort out their troubles; an Ivory Coast immigrant in Paris (Isaach de Bankole) has an intriguing encounter with a beautiful blind passenger (Beatrice Dalle); an ailing priest in Rome rides with a particularly blasphemous hack (played hilariously by Roberto Benigni); and finally, a morose driver in Helsinki tells a hard-luck story to three drunken passengers at dawn.
