A Farewell to Arms

(Frank Borzage, US 1932, 78 min., 35mm)

Ernest Hemingway’s great novel was first translated to the screen in this powerfully memorable melodrama from Hollywood’s precode era. Performers Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes bring to life the story of a tragic love affair between a soldier and a nurse during World War I. Recently preserved by George Eastman House in collaboration with the UCLA Film and Television Archive, a new 35mm print will be shown that showcases the vivid cinematography by the great Charles Lang, who won an Oscar® for his achievement. Bonus: After the screening, a look at the film’s alternative, “happy” ending.
