(Stanley Nelson, US 2006, 86 min., 35mm)
In November 1978, 913 members of the People’s Temple, under the leadership of the Reverend Jim Jones, committed mass suicide at their Guyana compound. Using stunning archival footage, director Nelson shows the rise and fall of the undeniably charismatic Jones, whose megalomaniacal tendencies ultimately and tragically overwhelmed his progressive notions about race and religion. The documentary also utilizes new interviews with the few surviving members to create a detailed history of the church and a revelatory investigation into Jones’s cult of personality.
