It Always Rains on Sunday

(Robert Hamer, UK 1947, 92 min.)

The latest rediscovery from Rialto Pictures is an excellent multi-character mosaic set in the working-class East End of London. The central drama centers on an escaped convict (John McCallum) who seeks refuge in the home of his now married old girlfriend (Googie Withers). Hamer, the director of Kind Hearts and Coronets, delivers a lovely and moving slice of life photographed by Douglas Slocombe, who later lensed the first three Indiana Jones adventures.
