El Topo

(THE MOLE, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Mexico 1970, 124 min., Spanish with subtitles, 35mm)

One of the first “midnight movies,” Jodorowsky’s enduring cult classic is a philosophical, mystical, and phantasmagorical epic set in a timeless Mexico. An egotistical outlaw named El Topo (played by the director) travels into the barren desert to kill four masters at the urging of an ambitious woman. Loaded with dazzling and sometimes shocking images of sex, violence, and mystery, it frequently plays like an oddball combination of Luis Buñuel and Sam Peckinpah. A new 35mm print will be shown.
