Death Race 2000

(Paul Bartel, US 1975, 78 min.)

then at 8:30 p.m. DEATHSPORT

Deathsport

(Allan Arkush & Henry Suso, US 1978, 82 min.)

These two exploitation drive-in staples from Roger Corman’s New World Pictures feature some outrageously cheap costumes and sets mixed with imaginative storylines and plenty of violence and nudity. In the “futuristic” world of witty satire Death Race 2000, a totalitarian regime quells the masses with a gladiator-style cross-national road race where contestants rack up points by plowing over anyone who gets in their way. The top opponents are David Carradine as Frankenstein and a pre-Rocky Sylvester Stallone as Machine Gun Joe Viterbo. In the semi-sequel Deathsport, Carradine returns as another hero who must now battle “destructocycles” with the help of rarely clothed Playboy playmate Claudia Jennings. Two films for one admission price.
