Darling

(John Schlesinger, UK 1965, 127 min., 35mm)

Julie Christie stars as a status-seeking model, tear-assing her way to the top of the British social ladder. Two for the Road and Eyes Wide Shut scribe Frederic Raphael’s script is as crackling and caustic as anything by Eugene O’Neill, and Dirk Bogarde and Laurence Harvey make impressive turns as two casualties of this darling’s love. Director Schlesinger lingers on Christie in nearly every frame, and for her extraordinary performance, she took home the Best Actress Academy Award®.
