(John Carpenter, US 1974, 83 min.)
Four astronauts, who spend their time destroying unstable planets and listening to surf music, confront an intelligent bomb with a God complex that is determined to blow up the spaceship. With this forgotten low-budget jewel, where aliens suspiciously resemble beach balls and spacesuit chest plates are made from muffin trays, John Carpenter makes his feature-length debut. His space comedy’s claustrophobic atmosphere is counterbalanced by some of the most hilarious moments in sci-fi cinema. The screenplay is by Dan O’Bannon, who later penned Alien, and plays one of the astronauts.
