(Fritz Lang, US 1952, 105 min.)
From German director Lang’s (M, Metropolis) American period, this noir melodrama, adapted from Clifford Odets’s play, opens with Barbara Stanwyck as a fallen woman returning to a seaside hamlet to find unstable domesticity with a simple-minded fisherman (Paul Douglas). But soon she is ensnared in the adulterous nets of Robert Ryan’s boozy interloper. In what was her largest part to date, Marilyn Monroe co-stars as a cannery worker. Members admitted free.
