Chelsea Girls

(Andy Warhol, US 1966, 210 min., 16mm)

Warhol’s cinematic masterpiece is one of the most commercially successful avant-garde films of all time. Shot mostly in rooms at the Chelsea Hotel in New York, these nine unrelated episodes, utilizing two projectors at once, include Ondine’s famous temper tantrum, Nico crying to the strains of the Velvet Underground, Eric Emerson’s LSD-fueled grooving on his naked body, and Mario Montez singing “They Say It’s Wonderful.”
