Casa De Lava

(Pedro Costa, Portugal/ France/Germany 1994, 110 min., Portuguese and Kabuverdianu with subtitles, 35mm)

While delivering medical supplies, Portuguese nurse Marianna (Ines de Medeiros) returns a comatose migrant laborer back to his seemingly cholera-plagued colonial village home in the Cape Verde Islands, yet the remaining villagers deny knowing the corpse-like man. Similar to Roberto Rossellini’s Stromboli in showing a young woman trapped in a strange and secret culture, the haunting story is enhanced with mesmerizing Creole music.
