(Hal Ashby, US 1976, 147 min.)
Ashby’s epic and remarkably un-clichéd biopic depicts folk singer Woody Guthrie’s (David Carradine) journey across Depression-era America. Beautifully photographed by Haskell Wexler (who won an Oscar®), the film presents Guthrie as a politically committed singer fighting for the rights of working-class people, and resisting all efforts to commercialize his music.
