Comic, tragic, and deeply empathetic, Sideways is a moving study of the male ego, and one of the key American films of the last decade. Two men—Miles, a divorced wine aficionado (Paul Giamatti), and Jack, a soon-to-be-married actor (Thomas Haden Church)—set out via car to the Santa Ynez Valley wine country on the eve of Jack’s marriage, nursing the wounds of the middle-aged along the way. But the long-term effects of a lifetime of disappointment prove to be a considerable obstacle.
