(Cecil B DeMille, US 1920, 90 min.)
Silent Tuesdays. Cecil B. DeMille was “The Great Showman,” but he was also one of the most versatile directors in film history, especially in a series of social satires he made between 1918 and 1923. Society matron Gloria Swanson, lingerie model Bebe Daniels, and clueless husband Thomas Meighan star in this cynical comedy of manners, where everyone flits between each other’s foibles. DeMille gleefully mocks the pretensions of his characters with wit, sensuality, and, ultimately, sensitivity.
