(In film nist, Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, Iran 2011, 75 min., Farsi w/subtitles)
Curator’s Choice! The Iranian government has decreed that director Jafar Panahi won’t be allowed to make another movie for 20 years. He may even end up in jail, but for the time being he just lives in his apartment, devastated at the prospect of forced inactivity. He needs to do something. And he does. He asks a friend — a cameraman — to spend a day with him. This “non-film,” illegally exported to the Cannes Film Festival, is his humble, moving cry for freedom.
