The Man with the Golden Arm

(Otto Preminger, US 1955, 119 min.)

Sinatra. Sinatra gives a beautifully restrained performance as Frankie Machine, a skilled card dealer with a demoralizing drug addiction. Controversial at the time of its original release because of its taboo subject matter, the film is still a rough journey. Elmer Bernstein’s frightful and frenetic jazz score perfectly accentuates the internal tensions fought by the title character. Restored by the Academy Film Archive with funding from the Film Foundation and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
