(Otesánek, Jan Švankmajer, Czech Republic/UK 2001, 132 min., Czech w/subtitles)
Švankmajer. Švankmajer’s live-action adaptation of K.J. Erben’s folktale “Otesanek” is a darkly funny fable about appetite and childbirth. A neurotic husband presents his forlorn, childless wife with a tree stump dressed as an infant, only to watch in horror as she nurses it into a gigantic, all-consuming monster.
