You Don’t Know Jack: Jack Nicholson in the ’70s The final production of Rafelson’s ill-fated production company BBS, The King of Marvin Gardens emphasizes mood over plot. Nicholson plays a Philadelphia-based radio host called to Atlantic City by his shady brother (Bruce Dern) to help develop a deluxe Hawaiian resort. These icy and listless dreams are matched by cinematographer Laszlo Kovac’s expert lensing of a wintry and desolate boardwalk empire.
