(Tulitikkutehtaan tyttö, Aki Kaurismäki, Finland 1990, 68 min., Finnish w/subtitles)
The Films of Aki Kaurismäki. Stuck in a dead-end job, forced to support her ungrateful parents, and socially isolated, Iiris (Kati Outinen) thinks her luck has changed after an encounter with a handsome stranger when, in fact, it’s only gotten worse. Pushed over the edge, Iiris begins to exact carefully crafted (and surprisingly efficient) revenge. Kaurismäki ended his self-proclaimed “Proletariat Trilogy” with a contemporary, working-class woman’s film that pushes the genre to its limit, stripping away all unnecessary embellishments to tell a darkly funny yet extremely sympathetic story of a woman wronged.
