(Aki Kaurismäki, Finland 1992, 100 min., Finnish w/subtitles)

The Films of Aki Kaurismäki. Based on the Henri Murger novel that inspired Puccini’s opera La Bohème, Kaurismäki’s loose literary adaptation is considered one of his best films. Aspiring poet Marcel Marx (André Wilms) finds camaraderie with an Albanian composer and an Irish painter (both played by Finnish actors!) after getting evicted from his apartment, the three struggling to survive despite their meager incomes and questionable talents. With cameos from Jean-Pierre Léaud, Louis Malle, and Sam Fuller, La Vie de Bohème is a perfect blend of absurdity and tragedy.
