(Rex Ingram, US/ France 1926, 80 min.)
Long before Colin Clive and Boris Karloff tried to create “Life!!!” in a ruined castle, Paul Wegener did the same with Alice Terry in the grippingly atmospheric The Magician, filmed on location in Europe by iconoclast Irish-American director Rex Ingram (with whom British director Michael Powell began his career). Rarely seen today, this film is in many ways the stylistic prototype for the 1930s Universal hor- ror films. Live accompaniment by Philip C. Carli.
