Trilby (Maurice Tourneur, US 1915, 60 min.) The Cub (Maurice Tourneur, US 1915, 50 min.)
Tourneur recreates the fabulously cluttered bohemian garrets of Paris in his Fort Lee studio in Trilby, an ostentatious adaptation of du Maurier’s popular novel of hypnosis, possession, and performance. In The Cub, reporter John Hines finds himself embroiled in a Hatfields-and-McCoys-type feud, exacerbated by his accidental romance with a mountain daughter. Together the films demonstrate Tourneur’s versatility barely a year into his American career. Both films were beautifully restored by George Eastman House from the obsolete 28mm format. Live piano by Philip C. Carli.
