(John Ford, US 1927, 60 min.)
Here’s something you don’t see everyday: a new film by John Ford. Thought lost for more than 80 years, this delightful comedy set largely in a New York actors’ boarding house was recently rediscovered in the New Zealand Film Archive and restored by the Academy Film Archive and 20th Century-Fox. The only extant Ford film from 1927, it captures a major talent growing from acolyte to artist. Also showing: WHEN LINCOLN PAID (Francis Ford, 1912, 12 min.), an early film by Ford’s brother, and THE BETTER MAN (Vitagraph, 1912, 10 min.), another New Zealand find, both recently restored by George Eastman House in collaboration with Keene State College and the National Film Preservation Foundation. Live piano by Philip C. Carli.
