Another Woman

(UNE AUTRE FEMME, Jérôme Foulon, France 2002, 106 min., French with subtitles, Video)

Ten years ago, while in Paris living as a man, Lea (then Nicholas) abandoned her wife, children, and career as a doctor, in search of herself and a new life. Returning to Paris on a business trip, Lea poses as a journalist in hopes of catching a glimpse of the family and life she left behind. Guilt won’t let her keep up the charade for very long, but revealing her true identity may destroy the family she so desperately wants to salvage. Another Woman is a thoughtful and emotionally charged drama that invites us to re-evaluate our ideas about identity and family, and leaves us to try and decide: Just how much are we willing to sacrifice to be ourselves?

The King and The Clown

(WANG-UI NAMJA, Jun-ik Lee, South Korea 2005, 119 min., Korean with subtitles, 35mm)

The King and the Clown, Korea’s 2005 Best Picture winner and, until recently, the highest grossing film ever in Korean history, is a vibrant and colorful epic costume dramedy set against the backdrop of 16th century Korea. Based on actual events, the film tells the story of the deranged King Yeonsan who falls in love with the androgynously beautiful street minstrel Gong-gil, sending shockwaves to his Royal Court and his constituents. But Gong-gil is already in love with another man. Dubbed by The New York Times as “maybe the equivalent of Brokeback Mountain,” ImageOut is eager to offer Rochester a rare opportunity to enjoy this unforgettable tale of love, friendship, and ultimate sacrifice.

Great World of Sound

Sunday, October 28th 2007, 4:30 pm

Great World of Sound

(Craig Zobel, US 2007, 106 min., 35mm)

Acclaimed at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, this unique American indie plays like a mix of Glengarry Glen Ross and American Idol. A close-up look at the practice of “song sharking,” the story focuses on pensive Martin (Pat Healy) and garrulous Clarence (Kene Holliday), salesmen recruited by a shady record label to seek out new “talent” and sell phony recording deals. At first oblivious to the scam, the duo soon realize they’re being conned just like the musicians. “Its sense of place, of lonely hotel rooms and fly-by-night offices decorated with spray-painted gold records, is as nicely observed as its morally compromised characters.” (Manohla Dargis, The New York Times). Craig Zobel and Pat Healy will not appear at this screening.

Staircase

Staircase

(Stanley Donen, UK 1969, 100 min., 35mm)

In this landmark comedy/drama, iconic British actors Rex Harrison and Richard Burton play an aging, bickering gay couple! Charles (Harrison) and Harry (Burton) are hairdressers in a London West End salon who have been living together for more than 20 years. The relationship takes a sour turn when Harry is forced to care for his nasty, ailing mother (Cathleen Nesbitt). This unusual departure for the cast and director Donen (Singin’ in the Rain, Two for the Road) features a lovely jazz score by actor and musician Dudley Moore. A new 35mm print courtesy of 20th Century Fox will be shown. For ticket information on all ImageOut films, call (585) 271-2640 or visit www.imageout.org. No Take-10 tickets or passes.
