(Billy Wilder, US 1954, 113 min., 35mm)
In the first of her two collaborations with legendary filmmaker Wilder, Audrey Hepburn is a chauffeur’s daughter and object of affection for the two brothers (Humphrey Bogart and William Holden) who employ her father. Cast strongly against type, Bogart is an almost nerdily responsible businessman, while Holden plays the swinging playboy. But the main reason to see this modern-day variation of Cinderella is Hepburn, who convincingly transforms herself onscreen from lovestruck teenager to a beautiful and charming young woman.

Before the Revolution

(PRIMA DELLA RIVOLUZIONE, Bernardo Bertolucci, Italy 1964, 115 min., Italian with subtitles, 35mm)
Bertolucci’s acclaimed second feature tells the story of the passionate and politically active youth Fabrizio (Francesco Barilli) who begins an affair with his seductive and unbalanced older aunt Gina (Adriana Asti). The idealism and curiosity of the main character are a reflection of the film’s equally young director, who was only 22 when he made this. Ennio Morricone, who would later write the music for several other Bertolucci films, composed his score before he gained recognition for Sergio Leone’s spaghetti Westerns. A recently preserved 35mm print with newly translated subtitles will be shown. Two films for one admission price.

(Alan Parker, UK 1976, 93 min., 35mm)
This weird and wonderful cult favorite is a loving, musical homage to Prohibition-era gangster films with some very unusual twists: all of the cast members are under 14, and the machine guns spew whipped cream instead of bullets. Bugsy (a pre-Chachi Scott Baio) is an ambitious hood caught in the middle of a war between gangleaders Fat Sam and Dandy Dan. Meanwhile, Bugsy’s love life finds him shuttling between the virtuous Blousey (Florrie Dugger) and hard-bitten nightclub singer Tallulah (Jodie Foster). The splendid production design, delightful performances, and a catchy, Oscar®-nominated song score by Paul Williams (The Muppet Movie) add up to make this the perfect entertainment for viewers of all ages. New 35mm print!
